Washington, DC (May 20, 2004) – At the National Business Travel Association (NBTA) Legislative Summit held here Monday and Tuesday, corporate travel managers and travel suppliers met with their representatives in Congress to urge implementation of effective security measures that do not have a negative impact on travel or travelers, and for security funding that recognizes the importance of travel security to national security.

“One in seven Americans is employed directly or indirectly by travel, so securing travel means securing American jobs,” said NBTA President and CEO Carol A. Devine, CCTE. “Security efforts that make travel an unpleasant experience will reduce the number of trips Americans take and will have a negative impact on the economy. We need to fund travel security without hitting the travelers’ pocket books and without impeding upon travelers’ privacy.”

Summit attendees met individually with their Senators, Representatives or staff. Participants were addressed by representatives of the John Kerry campaign and the Bush-Cheney campaign, as well as by Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) and by Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE).

The NBTA Founders Day Award was presented to Representative Harold Rogers (R-KY) in recognition of his excellence and innovation in travel and tourism policy.

The National Business Travel Association is the source for critical information on the business travel industry.
